Background

Student learning may be substantially enhanced for some students through the use of educational assistants. To this end, the Division endorses the employment of qualified individuals to act as Educational Assistants in support of an effective and efficient learning environment. Such Educational Assistants would at all times perform their duties under the direction and supervision of qualified teachers or administrators.

Procedures

1. The Principal shall be responsible for the effective provision of Educational Assistants within the school.

2. In full alignment to the vision, mission, principles and beliefs as set out by the Board, the Educational Assistant shall:

2.1. Act in a responsible manner toward students, parents, teachers, colleagues and others in all manners applicable to their role in the school;

2.2. Maintain strictest confidence of information gained through the position when that information is not available to the public.

2.3. Maintain good public relations when responding to inquiries regarding a student;

2.4. Refer those inquiries made outside the Educational Assistant’s mandate to the appropriate supervisor, teacher, therapist, or administrator in consultation with the teacher and/or school administration.

3. The Educational Assistant serves as an assistant to the students’ teacher(s) and shall strictly refrain from undermining confidence placed in the school or the staff by any means.
